On October 3, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Lithuania hosted a solemn reception-concert at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences to mark the 34th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.

The event was attended by officials from the Lithuanian Seimas, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other state institutions; ambassadors accredited to Lithuania; members of the diplomatic corps; public figures; the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Baltic States, His Grace Archbishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan; the Honorary Consuls of Armenia in Lithuania and Latvia; and representatives of the Armenian communities of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Armenia’s Ambassador to Lithuania, Ara Margarian, and the Chairman of the Seimas Foreign Relations Committee, Remigijus Motuzas.

In his speech, Ambassador Margarian, referring to the ongoing devastating wars and humanitarian crises, underscored the importance of Armenia’s Peace Agenda, presenting developments in this direction throughout the year. He highlighted the agreements reached in Washington on August 8.

According to the Ambassador, the establishment of peace and the implementation of TRIPP would be a major geopolitical achievement with significant economic benefits. He also referred to Armenia’s ongoing comprehensive reforms and the steps being taken toward deeper integration into the European family.

The Ambassador emphasized the strengthening of Armenian-Lithuanian relations, underlining Lithuania’s valuable support for reforms in Armenia and for the country’s European aspirations. He also noted that Lithuania was the first country to recognize Armenia’s independence, and that the choice of venue for the event was symbolic: the building of the Academy of Sciences is where the “Sajudis” movement, a pioneer of Lithuania’s independence struggle, was founded.

The event opened with a concert program including both classical and folk music.

Young pianists Vardan Geodakyan and Arthur Grigoryan, together with Lithuanian soprano Milda Drejeryte, performed works by Armenian composers Komitas, R. Melikyan, A. Khachaturian, A. Babajanyan, and E. Mirzoyan.

Latvian-Armenian duduk player Tigran Tumanyan and his ensemble presented new interpretations of well-known Armenian folk songs.

As a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the great Lithuanian poet and composer M.K. Čiurlionis, several of his works were also performed during the concert.
